The Barbados Defence Force started its thirtieth year of existence yesterday with a church service of thanksgiving and celebration.

Yesterday, Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF), Colonel Alvin Quintyne and his men, as well as ex-Barbados Legion members, The Barbados Coast Guard and Barbados Cadets attended the church service at the St Mathias Church.

Acting Prime Minister, Freundel Stuart; Police Commissioner, Darwin Dottin and his constabulary also attended the service.

The official colours – or standards – of the Barbados Regiment were presented at the beginning of the service and then again at the end when acting Prime Minister Stuart took the salute from the forces that formed a parade in St Mathias Road outside the church.

The Archbishop of Barbados, The Right Reverend Dr. John Holder, in his official sermon noted the long-standing work of the BDF and oversaw their blessing.

The BDF Public Relations Office told the Barbados Advocate that the week of activities will allow the general public to interact with the soldiers in some relaxed activities, while giving the armed forces a time to celebrate with each other.

These activities will include a Beach Sports Day starting at 9:00 a.m. at Brandons Beach on Wednesday, an Amateur Talent and Karaoke night at the St. Ann’s For on Thursday night and a sports day on Tuesday at the Fort. The week of activities will culminate with the BDF 30th Anniversary Parade in Queen’s Park, Bridgetown on Saturday. (KG)
